Herons have been my totem animal since one flew over my head seemingly close enough to touch in the early Summer of 2011. The encounter was persistent in my mind until I looked it up and found the message to be spot on for my circumstance, as those things, horoscopes, psychics and the like tend to be. But still it spoke to me and I received the encouragement. I have seen one here and there over the years – my kids also spotting them for me. They are not common to see and the meaning would be stirred up in that moment and I would be bolstered and strengthened again.
Before the stay at home order, I spontaneously called a friend to see if she could walk and show me the heron’s nests she told me were in the area. I thought they were by the lagoons and was prepared to meet her a couple of miles away. Instead, she said to meet her in the school parking lot, where I drop my daughter off every morning less than 1/4 mile from my house.
I have lived here for 2 1/2 years. I had never seen them before. The nests are less then a 10 minute walk from my house. The birds weren’t back yet when she showed me where to look. I could have easily walked by and not noticed them.
Last week when it was in the 50’s I went out twice to walk. The first time in the late morning which are the photos with the amazing blue sky. Later in the afternoon – the sky had changed but, well, you’ll see. Take the time to scroll through the pictures. The gift of photography is it allows you to witness something you would not necessarily witness otherwise. Just amazing.
